So another NaNo is upon us and, even though I had set out to participate I'm not. Nope, I am still hammering away at this steam punk thing since it seems that I am hell bound and determined to finish it no matter how bad it might be.

I need to figure out a way to get old entries organized because with, like, three chapter ones it's kind of confusing :/ Also I should be posting something before the end of the year. I'm hoping that "something" is the first couple of chapters all together and, again hoping, that they'll be better than what's been posted already. We shall see.

And, God help me, I have a kernel of an idea for a possible sequel. But still no name for this hot mess I'm working on right now! So frustrating.

I haven't abandoned this project yet (though it's been mighty tempting let me tell you)! I really am hell-bound and determined to finish this stupid thing and, to that end, I've been doing some more research into life in Victorian London and, as always, tweaking my actual story which sorely needs a name even though I really suck at that :/

Anyway! Specifically I've been looking into titles and peerages and oh man. England. Way to give people, like, a billion names and make it kind of confusing as to how people address you. Though I think I have it all sorted out and thanks to the wonders of the internet Jon's title is real! And I think I know how everyone will address him! Huzzah!

Sterling will call him Ravensdale as they went to school together and enjoyed a rather intimate relationship. Ellie and Doyle will continue to call him Jon - Doyle as they've known each other since childhood, Ellie just to be contrary.

Doyle is Doyle to Jon but David to Ellie.

Ellie is Ellie or Elemere depending on how annoyed Jon is with her. Very rarely she is Miss Stuart.

Sterling is Sterling to everyone. Or Mr Sterling. Or Agent Sterling, I suppose, in his professional capacity. Apparently, no one used first names in Victorian times which I should know thanks to my obsessive re-reading of Sherlock Holmes stories ...

When formally introduced Jon is Lord Suffolk and is referred to as My Lord or Your Lordship. That he is also Earl of Berkshire never really comes into play, I think, as it's a newer title than the Suffolk one and age takes precedence. Though if he ever has a (legitimate) heir he would have the Berkshire title until he inherits the Suffolk one from his father.

I found a neat dictionary of 19th century slang but it's all lower class stuff. Still good for pirates, though, and shocking the gentry!

Has anyone actually missed my posting here? XD

Well, not literally, but I post this with her in mind :)

This being a brief biographical account of Sterling's early life )

A life of wealth and beauty )

Am working on short bios of all the major players so I have something concrete to build on. Have also started my official rewrite so keep an eye out for a slightly more polished and coherent version of events to be posted in the coming days/weeks/months. Tho first chapters are very quickly becoming a pain in my ass.

I haven't forgotten about this blog or my (still unnamed) novel! I've been spending some time doing internet research (the best kind) and sketching (it all sucks tho). The query of my searches have been about the English Army in the late 1870's. I found a website dedicated to the Second Anglo-Afghan war which was pretty surprising and some Google books ... All of this is so I know how exactly Jon and Sterling wound up in Afghanistan in the first place.

The sale of commissions had been done away with so they couldn't have bought their way in (which they would have been able to do being wealthy sons and gentlemen besides) and the army was being divided by region? I think. If I've read stuff correctly :/ Which means I need to figure out just where in England everyone lives. Good to know anyway considering that stately Wayne manor the Ravensdale estate does factor into the story.

Anyway, what I've read so far leads me to believe that they would have just enlisted, been trained and entered the infantry with the rank of Second Lieutenant. And while they couldn't have been forced to fight overseas they certainly could have (and did!) volunteered to do so.

Jon might be getting a pension because his injury cut his service short. I'll look into that too because that's just how OCD I am about these things.

What was a quick question has turned into a whole THING because I haven't found a definitive quick and easy answer :P

I just need to finish this whole stupid thing so I can start rewriting stuff and really build their world

ETA: Chris has informed me that the boys, given their social class, would have entered a military academy and then gone into service with the rank of Private. THE MORE YOU KNOW

I ran across this song and while it doesn't fit the letter of the character it certainly fits the spirit of Jonothon. Especially in his darker, more cynical moods.

Trying to flesh out my Big Bads, so I'm going to dump some thoughts that have been moving around in my head.

I'm going to take the Victorian idea of the aether and use it for my world - it helps some of the tech work and no one's really sure how it works, but it does. It's also the same energy source (? for lack of a better description) that Nymphaea taps into to work her magic.

Related to that, these rocks that people collect (and that Jon has on his pocket watch chain) might be either concentrated aether or they've been infused with the stuff. And these rocks just might have latent properties - like giving off light or intense heat/cold - if I run with this I'm gonna have to keep it away from high fantasy territory, though.

The Brotherhood of the Jackal is going to be a group of cultists. They worship Nymphaea and are working to help her realize her goals. Nymphaea I see as a sorceress/priestess and an incredibly shrewd/patient woman. She has her eyes on the prize and she'll do whatever needs to be done to get it.

The prize being, I'm thinking, the return of her god/lover. Still working on this

The Brotherhood is going to be an intricate network of spies/criminals/wealthy patrons - they have people everywhere.

This unnamed British gentleman is the one who woke Nymphaea up (rather unintentionally. OR WAS IT?) and now he's working with her, helping her get acclimated to the modern world and sexing her up

And that's what I have. Thoughts?

Do more research on the Rational Dress Society and rational dress.
Ellie would support this, I think.
